Surrey’s Sustainability Charter was developed and approved in 2008. In 2014, Council approved a process to update the Charter in order to review and update the vision and goals, align it with the OCP directions, simplify its structure, update and align the community indicators, and to support decision-making processes using the Charter. The Centre designed and facilitated the stakeholder engagement process, which involved representatives from over 60 community organizations providing input and helping to rewrite the Charter to articulate the community’s shared goals and desired outcomes.
Furthermore, staff and senior management were engaged through surveys, interviews and workshops to determine how to best incorporate the Charter into planning and decision-making processes so that sustainability would be infused more effectively throughout the organization.
The City’s next steps are to develop a strategy to further engage the community and citizens, and support implementation.
